Teacher: Miss Caitlin Eakin

Welcome to 1E's website.

We hope you enjoy browsing through our photos and looking at some of the fantastic work we have done this year!

TOYS!!

Who would have thought you could learn so much about toys?  They're just furry little creatures that we cuddle and take to bed... or so we thought!

We were asked to bring in our favourite toys to school so we could explore the many types of toys that exist in our very own homes.  We discovered there were loads of toys that were very different from one another.  They were made out of many different things, such as material, fur, plastic, wood and much more.  There were some with batteries and some without, some could walk and some could talk.  There were old toys and new toys and there were loud toys and quiet toys.  But we still couldn't get enough so we also made some of our own!

Read on to see what we have done...

This is a graph of our favourite toys.  We have sorted them into four groups; plastic, wood, soft toys and toys that have batteries.  According to our graph there were 6 soft toys which shows they were the most popular toy, and there were only 2 wooden toys which shows they were the least popular toy.

We then went on to make our own toy graph using photos of our favourite toys.

Here are some Peg Dolls we made in Art with Mrs Sharp.  We wrote a class procedure on How to Make a Peg Doll.  Some of the materials we needed were pegs, wool, fabric, pipe cleaners and textas.

We wrote some great stories about our toys coming alive.  Here are some examples...

My Toy That Came Alive # 1

My Toy That Came Alive # 2

My Toy That Came Alive # 3

My Toy That Came Alive # 4

In our Reading Task Centres we enjoy using the computers to learn about words.  Here are some toy words we learnt...

We had a Woodwork Incursion with a man called Harry.  He was great and had a cool accent.  He showed us how to make wooden toys with flashing eyes!

These are some other awesome toys we made in class...

This is a balancing clown.  We used paper clips to weigh his hands down so he can balance on his nose.

This is a pop-up toy.  We used half a ping pong ball, plasticine for the weight, a skewer and a paper picture.

This is a wooden toy we made in our woodwork incursion with Harry.  It has flashing eyes.

This is a bendy bear that we made in our task centres.  It uses split pins to move its arms and legs.

Have a look at what we wrote about the Woodwork Incursion...

"If I was a toy I would love to be..."

We are really lucky to have access to a large amount of computers and use them regularly.  Here are a few examples of a Toy Project we did using different thinking skills...

Warrandyte Festival...

1E and the rest of Anderson's Creek Primary took part in the Warrandyte Festival in many different ways.  We entered decorated pumpkins and ducks in a competition and walked in the Warrandyte Festival Parade.  As the theme was "Home Grown Fun" we decided to dress up as brightly coloured flowers in planter boxes.  Our school won "Best Overall" for the parade which we are very proud of.

LIGHT!!

We have been having a lot of fun experimenting with light.  We have been studying things such as; where light comes from?  What makes light?  How do we see and do things?  What happens when objects block the light?  How light travels in straight lines, and much more!

Another Reading Task Centre that we have done has involved typing words to do with light and dark, then using the draw program in Windows to flip the words horizontally.  This shows us how shapes and words can be reflected.

One of our computer activities was to experiment with transparency, something that light does travel through.  This is what we did...

Check us out experimenting with our shadows!  We went outside at 10am and traced around our shadows with chalk.  We then went out again at 2.30pm and found that our shadows had moved a long way!  We learnt that when the sun appears to move, our shadows move too.  As light travels in a straight line, our shadows are always on the opposite side of us to the light source.

Values Education...

Every week each Grade take turns in presenting a new value to the rest of the school that promotes getting along with people and doing the right thing.  When it was our turn, 1E and 1G made posters on the value "Being Helpful".  Some of our posters were displayed in the office on a noticeboard.  This is Lewis' Being Helpful poster.

When you are cleaning up your table you are being helpful.

Here are some PowerPoint slides we have made on Sources of Light...
