Our grade has 23 children in our classroom, of which 9 children are in Grade 6. The remainder of the class is Grade 5 children, so we have a composite class. We are fun bunch of kids and who great to be around. We work together well and always get our work done. Oh I most forgot, we have an awesome teacher. Her name is Mrs. Pianta. She is so nice to be around and makes all our work fun. We always have new ideas to decorate our classroom. We have all sorts of cool collages and all the really good homework is up on the wall. We also have a special money system as rewards for good work and doing jobs. We hope you will read our homepage which we have created ourselves so you can understand what we have been doing this year so far!!! By Brita & Holly |

Sovereign Hill On the 4th of March the Grade 5’s went to Sovereign Hill to learn more about the Gold Rush. The first activity my group did was gold mining in small mine shafts, (it wasn’t real gold). We were pretending to be Irish, English, American and Chinese men. Claire and Rhys were made bankers and James and Holly were made troopers. The bankers cashed the “gold” and the troopers sent people to jail.
We were allowed to go gold panning. Some people struck it rich while
others went poor. At the Gold Smelting the man who had the job was one of the most important men in the gold business. The reason why he had the most important job is because he made the gold 99.9% pure. He showed us how he melted the gold in a special metal cup then how he poured it into a metal mould. We had a good time and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. By Jocelyn , Claire & Chris |

Journals In Term One 5/6P studied ‘Gold’. We made our own journals from scratch. All the journals were different sizes and shapes. There were ribbons and bows, ties and knots but they all looked pretty good in the end.
We wrote in the
journals continually. We pretended we were characters from around the
world. The main origins were English, Irish, American and Chinese. We all enjoyed making our journals even the boys! By Jocelyn & Claire |

Canberra Camp It was a long journey to get onto the streets of Canberra. With two buses all the way from Warrandyte to Canberra finally saw some new faces in town. The trip itself was around a ten hour drive. On the way up we had lots of stops. The trip was very boring, especially listening to the person next to me snoring his head off. When we arrived we yelled with joy to find we crossed the ‘Board to Paradise’. We made our way to the park where our journey was to begin. We pulled our bags off the bus and made it to our cabins. Home for the next 4 days! When we unlocked the cabins, found the bedrooms and started to close our eyes, when we heard a knock at the door. Mr Crabb came running in yelling out, “Dinner, dinner.” The dinner wasn’t much but at least it was food. |
|
| Canberra Camp The next morning at about 6:30 Mr Crabb woke us and we now had to have breakfast. We had to wear our school uniform because we were going to Parliament House, AIS and the older version of parliament. The Australian Institute of Sport was really fun; we played lots of sporty games. We saw some famous gymnastics training in the gym room. On Wednesday we went to ‘Questacon’, the Science museum, art gallery and we got to play on the jumping pillow. Questacon had lots of interesting and fun rides to go on. There was an ‘Earthquake House’, ‘Vertical Slide’ or ‘The Drop’, as some people called it. On the vertical slide we dropped from about 3 metres vertically and we had to wear some workmen suits which were really embarrassing to wear. |

Canberra Camp After dinner on Wednesday night we went to Telstra Tower was we could see the whole of Canberra. We also saw an old teacher from last year, Mrs Williams. Finally the trip was over, we were all exhausted and we were going home. It felt like another epic journey back to Warrandyte but finally at about 4:00pm we arrived home. I’m glad we left Canberra earlier than we expected. It was great seeing our family faces and sleeping in our own beds again. |

Water Life In Term 2 we have studied the subject of ‘Water Life’. In this topic so far we have learnt about coral reefs around the world. We have found out a lot about these reefs and how they are created. We have started a ‘Web Quest’ that tells you bits of information about coral reefs and marine life. The homework we have had so far has all been about marine life. When we started a lot of the people in the grade didn’t know much about the marine life topic. After 2 weeks people in the grade were starting to learn a lot more about the coral reefs and marine animals and mammals. We have been given tasks by our teacher each week about coral reefs; some of these tasks have been done by hand and on the computer. By Jack & Noah

| Italian We do Italian all year round. Our first subject was food types. In this unit of work we looked at all types of Italian foods like pizza and shopping products. We also looked at times when people eat in Italy. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are the main courses but they fit a Siesta in during the afternoon. (lucky them) We also did Italian adjectives relating to our food, we learnt things like yummy, scrumptious and delicious. In term 2 we focused on Italian food recipes( some people actually made the food!). We had recipes for scones, choc chip muffins( and choc chip biscuits), croissants and wrote them up to send to our Italian Epals. Our grade learnt a lot about them by sending messages to them and them replying back.stuff like that. We did some computer activities like matching Italian words with the right picture similar things like that. Another subject was names of shops. We learnt some names like fish shops, barbers, school lots of names like that( but in Italian). By Callum, Nicholas, Lachlan & Leah |

Homework This year’s homework has been focused on our term topic like ‘Gold’ and ‘Water Life’. Lots of our homework has been made as a collage or on computer. The tasks have been based on the ‘Thinkers Key’ which means they are all very different and lots of fun to do. Most of our homework has been presented differently and colourfully. The children in our class that have done this homework have put lots of work into doing it. The most effort has been put into the English homework. Children have been making models and posters and lots of other ways of presenting the homework. By Stephen & Louis |
