The Emu is an Australian animal. It's the second biggest bird in the world. It is also the second fastest bird in the world on foot. Emus live in places that have a lot of water. They like flat areas. The Emu does not put food into the chick's beak, they have to pick the food up by themselves. The chicks make a high, soft, whistling noise to call each other. |

Where Emus live:
Emus live nearly everywhere in Australia except near Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin and in Tasmania. Food: They eat grasses, seeds, fruit, flowers of shrubs and insects. The Emu also needs water. They drink once a day. When they are drinking they take in about 70 mouthfuls of water and while they drink, in-between every sip they put their head up.

| Breeding:
Emus are ready to mate when they are 18 months old. The adult emus stay together for about five months. How fast can emus run?Emus can run at 50 kilometers per hour. They also use there legs to kick any animals that disturbs them.

Adult Emus:
The male Emu is almost 2 meters tall. It weighs between 35 and 50 kilograms. The female is larger than the male. Emus live for six years. Enemies: The enemies of the Emu are Foxes, Eagles, Dingoes and Feral Cats.

| Emus chicks: The baby emus can walk five to twenty four hours a day. The chicks have striped feathers when they are young. The egg can weigh up to 1 kilogram. Other females would kill their eggs so the male chases them away.

Life cycle:
The Emu starts as a egg then it goes to a baby chick, then the chicks black and white feathers fade away when its about four months old. |

Nesting: The male Emu builds a nest on the floor. The nest can be up to 10 cm thick and 1 or 2 meters wide. Emus make the nest out of grass, twigs, leaves and bark.
