Introduction: 

The Pygmy Possum is an Australian marsupial,  which is EXTREMELY endangered! This mouse- size mammal is only about 150mm from the head to the tip of the tail. It weighs about 45kgs. There are 7 different types of Pygmy Possums.

 

Description: 

The Pygmy Possum has big black eyes and beautiful black or brown fur with a grayish- white fur underneath. They have a long tail for curling up flowers and other things that they can't reach with their paws. 

 

Habitat:

The Pygmy Possum lives in the southern part of Victoria and in Tasmania. The Pygmy possum is usually found in an area  where there's a great number of different species of plants. In winter the Pygmy Possum is usually found with its head tucked into its body, its ears over its eyes and coils it tail in bird's nests. The Pygmy Possum shelters itself with a leaf lined nest in a tree hollow or in leaves of a black boy. The Pygmy Possum is nocturnal and sleeps in a nest during the day.  

Feeding:

The Pygmy Possum eats blossoms, nectar, pollen and small insects that are near. The Long Tailed Pygmy Possum uses its long tail to grab blossoms that are out of reach for them. Then they get it with their little hands, suck out the nectar and pollen from the flowers. The Eastern Pygmy Possum uses its sticky middle sized tongue to slurp the nectar and pollen up. Their diet is seeds, fruit and insects.  

Breeding:

The breeding season for the Pygmy Possum is November to December. The mother usually has 4 young. The mother has 4 to 5 teats.

Life Cycle: 

A Pygmy Possum's life cycle is similar to any other possum. First they start off as a new born baby that is the size of a jelly bean, then it goes up the root canal, then the baby sucks on the mothers teat. When the young become too big to carry in the pouch the baby Pygmy Possums leave the pouch and stays in the nest until about 8 weeks old.

Predators:

The Pygmy Possum's predators are foxes and house cats. There has been a story about a cat that has killed a Pygmy Possum and took it to the house and laid it on the house's lounge room floor. How disgusting and bad!!

About the Birth: The breeding season for the Pygmy Possum is November to December. The mother usually has four young and has 4-5 teats. The baby Pygmy Possum comes out of the pouch at 4 weeks old.

Predators: The fox and the house cat.
