Red Kangaroo  By Rhys & Ryan

 Introduction:

The Red Kangaroo is an Australian animal. The Red Kangaroo is a marsupial. It is a very large group of Australian Kangaroos.

Description:

Red Kangaroos live in the great, grassy plains of  inland Australia. They are herbivores which means they only eat plants mostly grass, leaves and some twigs. They have very sharp teeth, which they use for cutting and chewing their food. They are large marsupials. The male Red Kangaroos can grow up to two meters which is as tall as a very tall man. The Red  Kangaroos mostly live in small groups of six and seven females and their young. Throughout the day, when it is very hot they will lie down under trees or next to a rock in the middle of the day and rest.

Joey:

A baby kangaroo is called a Joey. The Joey stays in its Mother's pouch when it travels around. It stays there for about eight months and then it  travels on its feet. The Joey is carried safely in the mother's pouch when she jumps along on her long legs. When she stops, she stands upright on her tail which she uses as a fifth leg.

                          Location:

The Red Kangaroo is found all over South Australia, Western Australia and parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and a small section of north west Victoria.

Habitat:

The Red Kangaroo has a preference for an openlands habitat where shade trees and plants are available such as mulga  and mallee scrub, shrubland, grassland and dessert areas. Mobs are semi-nomadic , being able to move around freely.

Relatives:

There are two kinds marsupials:

  1. Those with six front teeth in the lower jaw.

  2. Those with two front teeth in the lower jaw.

Kangaroos belong in the second group because they all have two front teeth in their lower jaw. Koalas and Possums belong to the second group too. The Red Kangaroo is only one of forty-eight kinds of Kangaroos found in Australia. Other members of this big marsupial family are Musky Rat Kangaroos, Potoroos, Bettongs, Wallabies and Padamelons

Predators:

The Red Kangaroos only predators are the Dingo and the Human.

Diet:

The Red Kangaroos diet is green herbage, including grasses and other Herbivores plants. Red Kangaroos prefer to eat fresh green grass. Their teeth can nibble the grass close to the soil.

Breeding:

The big male Red Kangaroo will fight for the right mate with a group of females and the winner becomes the father for the offspring. A single Joey is born in a undeveloped way. After 33 days the Joey has no Ears, no eyes, no tail and even no fur. It is about two to three cm long. It crawls along without help from the mother into the pouch and remains there, attached to the nipple.  About 90 days or more, the Joey can leave the mother's pouch for a short period of time and leaves it  after about 8 months.

Jaw and Skull:

The Red Kangaroo's jaw and skull are just like any other kangaroos. Kangaroo's have two kinds of teeth: Cutting teeth are called incisors and grinding teeth called molars. Incisors are cutting teeth at the front of the jaw. molars are grinding teeth at the back of the jaw.
