Gabba (Woolloongabba)

By Catherine and Jessica

The Gabba is situated in Brisbane, Queensland in Wellington Street, next to the old police station. It is a cricket ground as well as a Football oval. The Gabba is home to the Brisbane Bears, an Australian League Football team. It is also home to the Queensland Cricket Team. The ground was first made available to the Queensland Cricket Association in 1895. It was a swamp and needed to be drained to be made into a cricket ground. It is called the Gabba because the name of the suburb is Woolloongabba which is from the aboriginal language and is claimed to mean either Place of the Whip-tailed Wallaby, Whirling Waters or Fighting Place.
