Hanging Rock

by James and Troy

Hanging Rock is an ancient rock located east of Woodend in the midlands of Victoria. It is in the Macedon Ranges. It was originally created by lava coming up through cracks in the earth's crust, and then eroded by nature to form all its twisting cracks and fissures.

The rock is a safe and natural habitat for lots of wildlife and native plants.

There is a famous story about a girl's school outing to Hanging Rock in the early 20th century, where some of the girls wandered off and disappeared mysteriously, never to be seen again.
Joan Lindsay wrote this book called 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' and then later it was made into a famous movie.
The rock used to be a hide-out for a bushranger called Mad Dog Morgan.
Now you can discover the very best food at the Harvest Picnic Festival at Hanging Rock on the last weekend in February.
There are also two popular horse races held there at the race track at the foot of the rock.
