Kangaroo Island

By Chris and Tyson

The first sighting of Kangaroo Island was by Captain Mathew Flinders in 1802. The men on his boat killed a huge number of kangaroos for fresh meat. Flinders called it Kangaroo Island in gratitude for the fresh meat. Kangaroo Island is 55km wide and 155km long. It is very close to South Australia. It is 120 kilometres south-west of Adelaide. Many towns and bays were named by French and American sea captains who were exploring and sealing in the area.
Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island. It was cut off from the mainland by the sea, around 9,500 years ago.
