MELBOURNE CENTRAL

by Shaun and Ben

Shot Tower

Melbourne Central was built because people like shopping.
It is made of brick and glass.
The Shot Tower was made in 1889 and left in the new centre for visitors to see.

There are 130 Specialty stores within two buildings joined by covered walkways on levels 2 and 3. Melbourne Central is also connected to Myer by covered walkways, so you can shop all day without going outside!

The biggest store is Daimaru. Our favourite store is Toys-R-Us. It is sensational.

At the Food Court you can rest and have some lunch there are lots of choices you can have. You can sit near the windows.
Upstairs is Time Zone.

THE CLOCK

People gather around the clock every hour to listen to it play Waltzing Matilda.
The clock opens up and you can see cockatoos dancing and a boy playing a tune. The clock can be seen from every floor around the centre.
In the holidays they have shows under the clock that perform twice a day. They are usually magic shows and circuses.

In the school holidays children under 13 can buy Action packs for $5.00. You can get a MacDonalds hamburger, a gift from the Australian Geographic shop, a choice of Mrs. Field's cookies or an ice-cream, two free games at Timezone, a movie, passes to places like the zoo, Imax or a museum pass.

Ben's uncle Mark cleans the cone windows in Melbourne Central. He works for a company called Vertigo. All the people who work for Vertigo have to be good at mountain climbing and abseiling because the cone windows are very high and steep. On the main tower they use the swing to clean the windows.
Last Christmas someone from Vertigo pretended to be Santa and we saw him abseil down inside the building from the top of the cone.
