THE OLD MELBOURNE GAOL

By Kathleen and Nicole

MELBOURNE GAOL

The Melbourne Gaol was built between 1841 and 1864. The gaol is Melbourne's oldest gaol. The Melboune gaol is built of blue stone. It was made to hold a lot of prisoners, both men and women.

WHY DO PEOPLE GO THERE?

Prisoners are no longer held in the gaol, but it is a very interesting place to visit. You can get tickets from Ticket Master.
When it was open as a goal it would have been quite horrible to be there as a prisoner.
A mask and gun which belonged to the famous bushranger Ned Kelly can be seen there.
There are very old leg cuffs and hand cuffs. The door locks to the cells were HUMUNGOUS.
It is gruesome, but very interesting.
