INTRODUCTION

Sovereign Hill is an historical town in Ballarat where you can go and see what the olden days used to be like.

Where is it?

Sovereign Hill is in Ballarat, which is about 90 minutes west of Melbourne. Ballarat is a small part of Melbourne and Victoria and quite close to Ararat and Stawell. While you are in Ballarat you might like to visit the one of Sovereign Hill's souvenir shops.

How it was built

At Ballarat there was a lot of gold, so they decided to make a small historical town about the oldendays and all about the goldfields.

Why is it important?

Sovereign Hill is important because it helps children discover what it was like in the oldendays and it gives you the opportunity to find gold. It attracts tourists from all over the world. Sovereign Hill is a Man Made attraction.

Who uses it?

People from all over the world use and visit it. They mainly come to discover what it was like in the olden days in Australia.

There is a Mine Tour where a guide takes you underground in the mines and shows you where the gold was found and how the miners dug the gold out. The best thing is that the gold mines are still working, so you can see how they used to work.

Activities at Sovereign Hill

At Sovereign Hill there are many things you can do. You can go on a horse and carriage ride and if you are lucky you can even sit with the coachman. When you go on the horse and carriage or when you're paying to go on the ride, they give you a yellow ticket that you can keep.
You can also go back in time to when they used to go to school. A teacher takes you into a classroom and gives you a feather pen with some ink. You sit on a desk by yourself, it doesn't cost anything, but it only goes for 20 minutes.
The gold panning stream is a creek where you can try your luck panning to find some gold. You might find a little grain of gold!

Shops on the main street

The main street has lots of different shops. At the Blacksmith's shop, the blacksmith has to put horseshoes on the the sole of the horse's big foot.
The local store supplies people with people's everyday needs, such as food, milk and jams. The bakery is a place where you can go and buy delicious cakes and breads. The bakery is on the main street and one of the most used shops on main street. The candy store is a place where you can go and buy lollies. The candy there is candy they had in the oldendays, but not as expensive.
The leather shop is a place full of leather, where you can watch the man making leather belts.

Accommodation

If you like Sovereign Hill so much that you do not want to leave, you can stay at a special lodge in the village. Only a walking distance from Sovereign Hill, the lodge has a lounge area with an open fire and a bar where guests can relax after a long and tiring day at Sovereign Hill. The lodge is a two storey kind of like a house, but different, because it has lots of rooms.
