The Australian Institute of Sport is situated in Canberra. This is a training area for over 250 athletes in many sports from swimming to wrestling they are all here. They are at the moment training for the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney. There are 16 centres and stadiums in the A.I.S. All of these are for athletes use. There is also a place for the residence of the A.I.S. There is also the Canberra basketball stadium, it is sometimes called "The Palace." This is home to the Canberra Cannons. It also holds concerts and holds Netball games as well. Next to the A.I.S is the Bruce stadium home to the Canberra Raiders rugby team, games are often played there. For the Olympics a lot of the soccer games will be played there. There is also stadium on the tour for Archery, Volleyball, Boxing and Wrestling. |
| At the A.I.S there is a huge pool for the upcoming swimmers and the swimmers already going to Sydney this year. The young athletes start practice at 5:00am in the morning until 12:00pm then they go to school until 3:00pm and then go back to practice at 3:30pm and then finish at 9:00pm. If an athlete has an leg injury they practice running in the pool because its easier. Under the pool there is a little room made out of glass so the athletes coaches can see them practicing. In the stadium there is a hook up line that goes around the swimmers body then pulls them at the speed that they want to see what it feels like to be going at that speed. Some of the top swimmers that swim there are Ian Thorpe, Kieran Perkins and Susie O'Neill. |

In the centre there is a place for visitors called "Sportex". It is a hands on experience, where you throw, catch, hit, jump, balance and pull. You can race someone in a rowing simulator, balance on a balance beam or check on your swing in the golf room. It is all hands on and very spread out. You can get a tour by a athlete that trains there if you want. |
