Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a grave of any man or woman who died in World War One. He/She was brought back unidentified and still no-one has found any trace of his/her family. This memorial to signify all the people who served & died without identification in all wars we have fought in. In the room there are glass mosaic pictures of a nurse, soldier, sailor and airforce pilots. On the ceiling there is a mosaic, which is on a dome that can be seen from the outside of the War Memorial as well. The tomb of the unknown soldier is one of the main attractions at the Australian War Memorial.

About the Building

The building was thought up by a sergeant at war in Gallipoli in 1914. He even ordered one of his men to take off his uniform in the line of duty, to send back to Australia what the uniforms were like. The suit is still there to this day, even with all the dirt & mud patches. Unfortunately, the construction of the building started in 1940, while another world war was taking place. So it contains models & sculptures & diorama's of many more wars than the First World War. The building is now one of the most visited tourist attractions in Canberra. There are guided tours that are held at different times during the day.

War Displays

The world war sites are sections of the building which are to show things about World War 1,2 & the Vietnam War.They contain paintings, dioramas, sculptures & remains of the equipment that was found after the wars. It has vehicles that have been brought back from places like Germany & Gallipoli. It even has the suit of the soldier who stripped in the line of fire. There is also touch screens and computerized games.

Some of the displays are amazing!

Just like this one.

There are sculptures for all the Australians that died in the Vietnam War or the Army, the Navy or the Red Cross.
