Port Arthur is in south east of Tasmania. Hobart is 100 kms from Port Arthur. Britain sent the convicts to Tasmania as early as 1804. The convicts stayed there to serve time. The first Convict shipment arrived in Sullivan's Cove (Hobart) with soldiers and free settlers. There were also women convicts, some with babies. Many convicts preferred to die because they had to do hard work at Port Arthur. The British Government transported convicts for many years. About 70,000 convicts were transported to Port Arthur offically over the years until 1852. |

Many were on bread and water diets. Escaping was almost impossible because guard dogs were tied up across the narrow land at Eaglehawk Neck. Sharks in the bay that surrounded the settlement were fed to keep them there so convicts could not swim safely across the water. |
