In 1997 the Metropolitan Fire Brigade fought fires at Kew Cottages, at Visy paper premises in Campbellfield, and the bush fires in the Dandenongs and at Arthur's Seat on the Mornington Peninsula. The Country Fire Authority work hand in hand with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. |
| The Metropolitan Fire Brigade along with the C.F.A
conduct a Fire Safety Education Program (FIRE ED)
reaching over 600 primary schools and over 35,000
children during the year. Since 1990 there has been
greater awareness of fire safety amongst children as a
result of this program. Children were encouraged to
discuss with their parents a family fire escape plan from
their home. It's important if you catch on fire, to remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL. |

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade is very much involved in public education and laws about smoke alarms (it became a law in February 1997 that all homes be fitted with smoke alarms) and sprinkler systems. During 1997, 59 people were saved from getting injured as a result of fire alarms, 152 sprinklers provided early fire detection. It only took 7.9 minutes to get to a fire. |
