Great Barrier Reef by Tom and Ian
| The Great Barrier Reef is the
largest group of coral reefs in the world. It extends
along the northeast coast of Australia. The Great Barrier
Reef is not a continuous reef, but a scattering of
thousands of individual reefs. Almost all the reefs in
Australian waters now lie within the reef marine park,
the world's largest marine park, which has a 350,000
square kms. The Climate of the Great Barrier Reef varies from north to south. The north has tropical conditions and high humidity with a wet season around January. The south has cooler subtropical to temperate conditions. |

A Place to visit. Most resorts in the reef region are in the Whitsundays group of islands. Only the coral Cay resorts of Green Island, Heron Island and Lady Elliott Island can truly claim to be on the reef itself. |
| What is it? Scientist believe that the Great Barrier Reef began forming about five thousand years ago at a time when the sea level was twenty metres higher than today. The top most layers of the reef are only a few thousand years old. However most of these reefs are built upon a foundation of older reefs. |
