Map No. 2LA1: This is a map of the grounds and it shows you how to get there.

Introduction

This is our project about La Trobe Cottage. We decided to do La Trobe Cottage because it was a great place and it has a lot of history to go with the building.

The Name "La Trobe Cottage"

The Cottage was named after Latrobe, who was the first Governor of Victoria.

The Bed Room

These are some of the special features that are in the bedroom.

  • Colored engraving “ Cottages”, and it was made by P. W Tomkins in 1820
  • Rectangular Woven rug, which you will see on the ground in the photo
  • Oil painting of gum trees By W. W. Short in 1860
The Kitchen

Some historical features in the kitchen are;

  • Cast iron flat bottom with two handles from the 1850's
  • A round pail dated from the 1800s
  • Pine wood panel with worn leather they got it in 1880
  • Cast iron from USA
  • Long metal rod they got it in 1850.

The Portable House

The small weatherboard cottage was transported from Britain by ship because the government did not like the La Trobe family in Britain.
The cottage was then moved to Dallas Brooks Drive, (near the
Shrine) where La Trobe’s Cottage is standing today.

 Additions to La Trobe Cottage

Four years after La Trobe's Cottage had moved to Australia they built on a dining room. Everybody used to love being in the dining room. It was a priviledge to be allowed to eat in the dining room.
