About Parliament House
Parliament House
was opened in 1988 by Queen Elizabeth 11. The
first brick was laid late in 1980 and was
officially opened on the 9th of May 1988. It took
10,000 workers from 50 different ethnic
backgrounds 8 years to make Parliament House. The
final Price tag for Parliament House was $1.1
billion. Parliament House was made to last 200
years or more. Before the new Parliament House
was opened another house was used and is just
down from new Parliament House. It is now used as
a tourist attraction. The two seem to blend in
when viewed from The Australian war memorial or
Telstra tower. Before Federal Parliament moved to
Canberra in the Parliament House in Melbourne was
used as Australia's Federal Parliament House. For
the Bicentenery of Australia's Federation Federal
Parliament will be sitting in Melbourne.
Who's in parliament
House
- There are two house's in
Parliament, the Lower house(House of
representatives) and the Upper house (Senate).
The Lower House is were the Government(Liberal)
and Opposition(ALP) are. John Howard is the Prime
Minister at the moment and Kim Beazley is Leader
of the Opposition. The Government runs the
country and the Opposition opposes the Government
and keeps a close eye on the Government. when
they make a mistake the Opposition makes it
public and try's to make the Government look bad
in order to gain votes.
What is Parliament
House made of ?
- The main foyer in Parliament House
is made out of Fossilized marble, many Crab's,
Fish and other sea creatures can be found in the
floor, steps and railing. Parliament house was
also made out of 33km of corridor and 300,000
cubic meters of concrete. There are 4,500 room's
in parliament House with a gross floor of 250,000
square meters.
The design
Parliament House
was designed by Mitchell/Giurgola and Thorp
Architects. There design was chosen from 329
entries from 28 counties.
