The Snowy-Murray Development is one of the power developments of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme and is made up of 2 dams, 5 pondages, 3 power stations, 1 pumping station and 2 intakes. The other Development is called the Snowy-Tumut Development

The main dam is the Eucumbene Dam which was built in 1956 at a cost of $38,000,000. The second biggest power station is Murray1 in the Snowy-Murray Development and the biggest is the Tumut 3 Power Station in the Snowy-Tumut Development.

The Snowy Mountains Scheme is located about 100 kilometres south of Canberra in New South Wales the Snowy Mountains area. It is an important man-made feature which makes hydro-electric power, it provides many jobs for people in the area and attracts tourists, worldwide.

It can generate up to 15,00000 kilowatts in the Murray 1 and 2 Power Stations and provides 980,000 mega litres of additional water annually through the enlarged Hume Reservoir.

The scheme took 25 years to complete in the year 1974. More than 2,000 people work within the scheme today.

The Snowy- Murray Development produces hydro-electricity which is used by people from Adelaide to Brisbane.

The Scheme has 145km of underground tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts which collect the water and diverts it to the power station, where its turned into power. They also get power from the snow and rain, which is collected in the dams and reservoirs until it can be transferred through the power station.

The American Society of Civil Engineers has seen.the scheme as one of 25 world wide civil engineering land marks.

The men and woman who built the scheme were a handy breed, bringing with them skills from all four corers of the world. Over 100,000 people from 30 countries worked on the scheme for over 25 years to build it.
In 1981 a memorial was dedicated to the Scheme's headquarters in Cooma N.S.W. It was to dedicated to all the men a women who lost their lives while working on the project.
