ARTISTS IN WARRANDYTE   BY  GRADE 1S.

Many artists have lived and worked in Warrandyte.

Warrandyte is a very beautiful place.

In the past.........
Clara Southern (1860-1940) lived here at 'Blythe House' for 35 years. She loved to paint pictures of the Yarra River.

An Artists Trail by the river has signs which tell us about her life and her paintings.

Clara took lessons from a famous painter, Walter Withers, over 100 years ago. She liked to have her friends visit her. They would paint pictures of Warrandyte.

The painting called 'A Cool Corner' c.1918  is of a favourite spot along the river.

Other famous paintings by Clara Southern are      *'Audrey and Chickapeck' 1911

                                                                          *'Evensong' c.1900-1914

                                                                          *'The Warrandyte Hotel' c1910

Today.............

Artists like to come and paint the Yarra River. Warrandyte is still home to lots of artists.

Gunther and Belinda Kopietz have lived in North Warrandyte for the past 10 years.

Gunther is a sculptor. He makes life-sized, wooden statues of people and animals. If he wants his statues to last a long time he remakes them in bronze.

Inga King, another local artist, taught Gunther. They are great friends.

Belinda , Gunther's wife, likes to print. She carves pictures into lino and wood blocks.

Belinda puts the paper and inked block in the press and turns the handle. The paper and block are squeezed together to make the print.
We really enjoyed visiting Gunther and Belinda's studios and gallery.
