Alan Jones was born in Melbourne Victoria. His father was former race driver Stan Jones. He only raced a bit in Australia before going to England in the early 1970s. In 1973 he was the number one driver in a Formula Three team.
In 1976 he competed in the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch and he finished second and in the same year came fourth in the Japanese Grand Prix.
Jones returned to Australia in 1977 to compete in the Rothmans International series driving a Lola Formula 5000. He won the fourth and final round in Adelaide after three very hard previous races in which he crashed twice. He was also the winner of the Austrian Grand Prix, runner-up in the Italian, and came fourth in the Canadian and Japanese events.

In 1978 he won the Can Am Sports Car series in the United States team. In 1979 he won the German, Austrian and Dutch events in succession and created new lap records in England and Italy. His overall point score result was not good enough to give him the title, but in 1980 he was able to return to Australia in triumph. Jones then retired from Grand Prix racing. He then ran a stud farm in Victoria where he breeds prize bulls.
In the 2001 Grand Prix in Melbourne  he was a flags' marshal.
