Barry Humphries was born in 1934 in Melbourne. As a little boy he used to spend a lot of time playing dress-ups. At school he liked English, History and Art but did not like Maths. He was the first born in his family. Barry was worried because he did not know what he would like to do. He tried studying, and a few different jobs, but he really loved art and performing. In 1956 he created Dame Edna Everage, a Melbourne housewife. This is one of the lines that he says as Dame Edna: "Hello possums!!!" |

types of work all the time. He likes to spend time painting landscapes. Dr.
Humphries is the author of several books, novels, autobiographies, and
plays. His autobiography won the J.R. Ackerley prize for biography
in 1993. He was given the Order of Australia in 1982, and was endowed with
an Honorary Doctorate of Griffith University (Australia) in 1994. He
is married to Lizzie Spender, the daughter of British poet Sir Stephen
Spender, and has two sons and two daughters. This is him as another of his characters, Sir Les Patterson. |
