Sir Douglas Mawson moved with his family to Australia at the age of sixteen. He went went to a university in Sydney. Sir Douglas Mawson is important to Australia because he was known as a famous explorer. When he was 26 Mawson joined a British exploration team. The team was told to climb Antarctica's most active volcano Mount Erebus. Mawson was also to walk across the South Pole.

 

 

 

Sir Douglas Mawson was once a scientist as well as an explorer. After his success of his journey he returned to Antarctica. With his team in 1911 he mapped the northern part of Antarctica. Then after almost dying in the cold, people were amazed that he survived. His trip was named as one of the great Antarctic journeys. Sir Douglas Mawson passed away on the 14th of October 1958.
