| Nicky Winmar was born to be a football star. As a youngster he practised taking 'SPECCYS' by leaping off tree stumps. He practised tackling by tackling sheep at shearing time. Nicky's father told him that he would need to be able to play in the wet if he wanted to make the V.F.L. He and his brothers used a hose to make an artificial quagmire in order to learn how to handle a muddy ball. | |
| Nicky Winmar was chosen to play for St. Kilda at the age of
21. He won the Best and Fairest award in his second year at the club-1989.
He was St. Kilda's leading goal kicker in 1989. In 1995 he won his second club Best and Fairest Award. He has also been awarded the Michael Tuck Award. |
