Winnie was the leader of the Wurrundjeri Tribe
but is now dead. She lived in Healesville and then moved to Doveton in 1968
after her mother's death.
Winnie and other Aboriginals in her area decided to form an association specifically for Aboriginal people. It was formed in 1970 and established in Dandenong to help other families in the surrounding areas with housing, employment and welfare. She started up a hostel in 1972 to help families that had over crowded homes in the Dandenong area: the hostel is still going strong today. |
| There is also a Childcare Center named after
Winnie Quagliotti. Winnie was the chairperson of the Dandenong District
Aborigines Co-operative from 1970 to 1888 the year she died.
She also helped to organize camps for Aboriginal children outside the Dandenong area. She brought all the Wurundjeri people together, and established the Wurundjeri Land and Compensation Cultured Heritage Council Inc in 1985. She was chosen leader for their council by her people. |
Winnie started working as a cleaner and a
relieving manager for Aboriginal hostels, from 1972 to early 1983,Winnie
then became an invalid pensioner. She became ill and suffered a
stroke due to high blood pressure, related to stress. Winnie was buried in
Corronderrk, Healesville. By her being buried here she gained enough land
for 200 of her people to be buried there as well. This is getting land
rights the hard way.
