Flinders Street Station has
been standing for a long
time. |
|
Flinders Street Station is the central station for the suburban network of Melbourne's rail system. It is on the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street and next to the Yarra River. The first Flinders Street Station was officially opened on 12th September 1854 by Lieutenant-Governor Charles Hotham and was the first steam rail station in Australia. Flinders Street Station was named in 1837 after Captain Matthew Flinders of the Royal Navy. |

At this time Flinders Street Station was
an interesting collection of weatherboard sheds known as the Melbourne
terminus. The second Flinders Street Station was designed by
railway architect James Fawcett in partnership with railway
engineer H. P. C. Ashworth. It was started in 1901, but was not completed until
1910. Except for a few minor changes, Flinders Street Station today looks very much the same as the way as the two railway men designed it. Over the years Flinders Street Station has became a famous Melbourne landmark. People often use the clocks as a place to meet other people. |
|
Today despite the opening of the city loop station, it is still one of the busiest railway stations in the world. It has a total of 15 platforms, and four floors. Each day 1450 train movements are made in and out of Flinders Street Station. Tickets called Metcards are used on all public transport in Melbourne. |

In Melbourne, services run from
5am until midnight. You can pick up train route maps at any city
loop station. Video monitors display arrival and departure times and you are also notified of departures through a public address announcement. |
| Flinders Street Station has become a symbol of Victoria's capital City and is a part of the daily routine for nearly a quarter of a million people a day. |
