Haiku Poems

Haiku are a traditional Japanese form of Poetry. A haiku has 17 syllables, usually (but not always) with five in   the first line, seven in the second and five in the third. Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) is one of the most famous poets who helped to develop the form.

1st line: Time of the day (five syllables)

2nd line: Focus on something (seven syllables)

3rd line: Compare it to something else (five syllables)

Misty, morning light

Warm brown cows  stand motionless

Like still, brownish rocks

(from "Patterns in Poetry" by Jo Hinchcliffe)

I'm sure you could integrate this  poem into your topic for the term. It could also be integrated into a Christmas theme.
